About Our Dojo

Toyama-ryu Tradition

At Seikōkan, we practice the authentic techniques of Toyama-ryu (戸山流), a practical sword school with roots in real combat application. Originally developed for military training, Toyama-ryu emphasizes efficient, effective technique while maintaining the spiritual depth of traditional Japanese martial arts.

Our training balances the practical heritage of this fighting system with the character development and philosophical insights that can make Japanese swordsmanship a lifelong path of learning.

Our Philosophy

Makoto - Sincerity

The heart of our practice lies in sincere dedication to improvement, both in technique and character. True mastery comes from honest self-reflection and persistent effort.

鍛錬

Tanren - Forging

Through disciplined practice and repetition, we can forge both our technique and spirit. Like steel refined in fire, continuous training transforms raw potential into mastery.

Tamashii - Spirit

The warrior's spirit transcends technique and form. Through dedicated practice, we cultivate an indomitable spirit that remains calm in chaos and finds strength in adversity.

Training Programs

Kihon - Foundation

Introduction to Toyama-ryu basics: wearing a sword, drawing a sword, stances, sheathing a sword, and fundamental cutting techniques. Learn traditional etiquette and the philosophical foundations of our practice.

Kata & Tameshigiri

Classical forms (kata) and test cutting practice (tameshigiri). Students refine technique through solo kata and practical cutting exercises using wara (straw mats).

Kumitachi

Partner practice developing timing, distance, and tactical awareness. Beginners train with wooden swords (bokken). Once some proficiency is achieved, students can use non-sharp metal swords (mogitō) to practice. Eventually, practitioners progress to sharp swords as skills and control advance.

Advanced Applications

Deep study of sword combat applications, advanced kata interpretation, advanced tameshigiri, and teaching methodology.
